I was talking to my friend Cory while he was vacationing with his family in Germany. 

“The buildings, the architecture, even the people working at Starbucks and the taxi driver take their work seriously. You can tell they are great at it and care about their work.”

I can’t shake this from my mind. 
That is what I want my life to be about. 
Doing things well. A Craft approach to my work. 
Working alongside people who feel the same about their work. 

American self-help business books talk about efficiency, delegating, quick and cheap. 
The topic is consistently about how to get more in less time or less effort. 

That’s not the vibe my friend talked about. 
What he described was taking your time to learn. 
Giving your best to the work that is in front of you.  
Sitting in the struggle. 
Thinking things through. 
Becoming part of the work. 
Caring for the work. 

Working hard for sure, but more than that, a craft-based approach to the work. 

In our business, we have role scorecards to talk about the skills and responsibilities of each person in their role. When I think of them as The Craft of…. it helps clarify how I want our Team to think about their job. 

The Craft of…being A Craftsman 
The Craft of…being a Team Leader
The Craft of…being a Shop Leader, Project Leader, Business Manager, Creative…

That’s something I want to be a part of. A better way to do a job. More intention. More focus. A dedication to the craft itself. I want to know it from experience, from living in it, because Craft is doing things for their own sake, not to get somewhere else.

Craft is in the doing.

(Even if your craft is to make funny calendars — there is a way to do it well.)

Parkview Health opened a new location with a walk-in clinic, family medicine office, pharmacy, and on-site lab on the Electric Works campus to service the area just south of downtown Fort Wayne, Indiana. We installed our Surface Polish overlay and finished it with our StrongTread Polish – Classic system to create zero-threshold solutions, improving accessibility and ease of use in the space.
