I heard this term for the first time a few weeks ago during a football game: false steps.
False steps are any actions or movements taken which do not directly contribute to a successful play. Everything happens so fast in any given play that even a simple step in the wrong direction could mean the difference between success and failure. No step is better than a false step. If a cornerback in zone coverage gets fooled on play action and moves towards the line of scrimmage even a single step, the end result could be a wide-open receiver streaking down the field. He needs to analyze the play faster, and show discipline to not take this false step. The first step always needs to be in the right direction.
This also illustrates the domino effect a false step can have on a play where one player is out of position; all his teammates need to react to this false step, and they themselves must now play out of position to compensate for the false step. Sometimes they can adjust and avert an undesirable result, other times; this is impossible. A lot of times, our jobs are similar to the flow of a football game. There are periods of labor, exertion, and movement, followed by periods of downtime where we discuss the execution of the prior task, and set ourselves up for success on the new task.
Of course, we’re all human, and we’re all prone to take false steps. The lesson is to know they exist. That no step is better than a false step. If we can apply this sort of analysis to all our actions large and small, eventually it will be possible to recognize false steps in real-time, and ultimately before they’re ever taken.
